Biography of the Band

Call Atlantis, the band who wrote the song we are using for our music video, is a indie rock band originating from Birmingham. They are unsigned but have wrote a few songs and have a following on Facebook of around 18,000 people. Their songs include:
All their songs are punk rock genre and represent the bands thoughts on life and the challenges they have gone through during their lives. This makes the songs relatable and therefore more people will purchase their songs. The band was formed in 2011 in the UK in Birmingham, West Midlands. The band decided to release an album, however, did not get signed before releasing it. In fact their album was self-released. The songs on the album were:
1.Not Even Wishful Thinking Will Get You Out This Mess
2.Past regrets Future Threats
3.Who Are You ? (to Tell Me Who I Am)
4.Here's Your Comeback
5.Make It Alone

The album was called L'Espirit de l'Escalier which is Catalan for The Spirit of the Escalier. The album cover was an adaptation of an undersea couple which could represent the city of Atlantis itself.

Call Atlantis have already created on of their own music videos which we have watched and we are taking some of our inspiration from this. The music video is for their song Past Regrets, Future Threats and the video is below.

  • Mixing the past with the prsesnt
  • Post modern versions of traditional texts

  • Intertextuality
  • Reinventing

Conventions of a Punk Rock Style Music Promo

Punk rock is a genre that is usually associated with teenagers and the band members are usually under 30 years old. The genre also usually has lyrical themes about, love, parties and future and past. This means that the conventions of the music video is usually teen based themes and often has hints of humour in it to entertain the viewer.

This is from the music video for Backseat Serenade by All Time Low. They are also a band in the punk rock genre. As we can see, the members here all look under the age of 30. This agrees with the convention of age within the genre and we will also stick to this.

This is once again from the backseat serenade music video. We can also see that it is built to entertain as the lead singer  is dressed up as a cat. This makes the band appear as humorous as well as providing a source of entertainment in the video, Once again, suiting the punk rock style of music video.

This is another All Time Low song, This time, Time-Bomb. In this music video, there is a performance from the band as seen above as well as a narrative. The Narrative is about a man trying to rescue his partner. He also makes a bomb in this video. This means the video has a narrative as well as suiting the love convention of some punk rock  songs. This means it is a good example of a conventional punk rock music video.

This shot shows an unconventional idea but it is also a very interesting and effective one. This shows the performance crossing with the narrative but they are still seen as two separate occurrences as they do not interact with each other. This is an interesting and effective idea we could possibly use.

This is from the music video for Bridges by Courage my Love. This band are very similar to Call Atlantis who are the band we have chosen to use for production.  The mise-en-scene in this video also suit the convention of it being aimed at teens and young adults as it is a schools American football game. This means that the viewers can relate to the band as they could have been to a similar event. We could also use something similar to this within our production.

Also, in this genres music videos, there is many close ups and mid shots that cut in time to the vocals or the instrument. This is seen in most, if not all punk rock promos.
